Today when we explored the Ponte Vecchio we saw hundreds of padlocks chained to the bridge and to the railings. Curious as to what they were, I did a little research: Legend has it that if two lovers attach a padlock to any surface of the famous bridge and then throw away the key into the Arno River below, your love will last forever. Millions of couples have come to the Ponte Vecchio for expressly this reason, to lock in their love and throw away the key for eternity. Of course, modern society being what it is, this is now illegal and if you are caught doing it there is a 50 euro fine…whomp whomp. The police have cut many of the locks off over the years which means…there is a room somewhere filled with locks cut from the bridge…this could be an attraction in itself.
